Volunteers needed for rangatahi experiences of social media research
Te Mana Whakaatu – Classification Office and Netsafe need young people aged 14 to 17 years to take part in a study exploring their experiences and views about what they see and do online and the impact or influence this might have on how they think and feel about themselves and others – meaning their appearance or how they look. People sometimes use the phrase "body image" when talking about this.
This research will help raise awareness and support development of educational resources for young people, their families/whānau, schools, and other people working in youth health and wellbeing. It's really important that we hear from young people directly about their views and experiences to help ensure support and resources work for them.
Research First will undertaking the research and want to talk to around 50 young people from diverse backgrounds and experiences from all over the country. You will receive a koha of $80 for your participation.
Taking part in the study involves:
- A short written questionnaire - with some questions about yourself (age and gender) and some questions about the topic such as things you see and do online; and
- A one-hour interview - in-person (at school or home) or by phone or an online meeting (Teams or Zoom).
You choose how to do the interview and who you would like to interview you from the research team. You are also welcome to bring a support person, such as a friend. If you'd like a support person, you should choose someone you're comfortable talking about these topics with (like body image and what you do online) and who won't feel uncomfortable hearing you talk about this stuff.
If you want to participate now but change your mind later, you can pull out of the study at any time.
