Mapping your cycle journey

Christchurch City Council Newsline: 11th October 2023

Daffodils are in bloom, lambs are on the Port Hills and the Godwits have returned from their Alaskan trip. It’s spring in Ōtautahi.

So the Christchurch City Council has released its updated bike map - in time for the warmer weather.

“The Ōtautahi Christchurch Bike Map is updated every two years or so to include all the new infrastructure we’ve built. This time around we’ve added 10km of additional cycleway to the map,” Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright says.

The new sections include the South Express reaching Riccarton Park and a new section along Hei Hei Road linking three Hornby schools as well as the Matatiki: Hornby Centre.

There have also been two short sections of the Nor’West Arc added around Hansons Lane, Blenheim Road and Annex Road to improve safe crossings.

The final section of the Te Ara Ihutai Coastal Pathway is included between Redcliffs Village and Rapanui Shag Rock, as well as the final section of the Rapanui Shag Rock cycleway connecting the pathway around Tidal View.

“The map also details the differences between our separated cycleways, shared paths, on-road cycle lanes and even mountain bike tracks to help people pick the best route for their level of experience,” Mr Wright says.

“And we’ve updated our information explaining the special features you might see using our network, such as shared paths, bus lanes, hook turns and roundabouts.”

Pick up a map from your local bike shop, Council Library or Service Centre, Ara | Te Pūkenga or the University of Canterbury.
