Connect with nature to uplift your wellbeing
There’s plenty of research that shows spending time in nature has a positive effect on both your physical and mental wellbeing.
Being able to see, touch or experience nature can help to lower stress, ease muscle tension and lift our mood. Some of us may also feel a spiritual connection to nature, which can bring peace and comfort.
Anyone can have a positive relationship with nature, no matter where or who you are.
There are sure to be plenty of free and nearby options where you can make the most of nature’s many benefits. Simply stepping outside and taking a deep breath, walking around your neighbourhood or even having an indoor plant can help elevate your mood.

- Walk anywhere at a park, on your local maunga (mountain) or explore a nearby walking track with whānau or friends.

- Swim at the beach, river or local pool.
- Stargaze or watch clouds moving during the day.
- Go for a hike.
- Garden – if you have the space, create and tend to your own vegetable or flower garden or cultivate indoor or windowsill plants.
- Exercise outdoors – play a sport, run or take your yoga mat outside.Taking notice of your surroundings when you are in nature, such as doing a senses exercise.
- Join a local community garden or a nature restoration group.
- Meditate or do a breathing exercise while outside.
- Take inspiration from nature for drawing, writing, crafting or photography.
Being present and feeling a sense of appreciation for nature can expand the benefits to your wellbeing.
