Sixty artists feature in new street art exhibition
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 30th July 2025
An upcoming group exhibition at The Welder in Welles Street promises to bring the streets indoors.
Roll Call - A Survey of Ōtautahi Urban Art and Artists is part of the city's street art programme and will shine a light on more than 60 urban creatives, from established to emerging artists. It features work by graffiti and mural artists, street artists and photographers, tattooists and fine art practitioners.
Some of the names likely to be familiar from their art across the city and bodies of work featured in shows include Dcypher, Jacobyikes, Jessie Rawcliffe and Kophie aka Meep.
Watch This Space is presenting the show in partnership with Art Walls Christchurch and Creative Director Dr Reuben Woods says the city now has a reputation as a “hot-bed” of urban creativity.
“Post-quake, there’s been this huge explosion in creative energy in Ōtautahi which has completely bought the cityscape to life. These murals, street paintings, interventions, installations and activations have attracted international attention, and deservedly so. This exhibition will showcase the stunning vibrancy of our urban art scene!”
Dr Woods says urban art is evolving and changing all the time, respecting tradition while defying expectations, and defined only by a sense of possibility.
“For Roll Call, artists have embraced the opportunity to present work that reflects this multiplicity - from interactive pieces, textiles and mixed-media sculptural pieces to complex letterforms, found objects, clothing and striking documentarian photography.”
Roll Call - A Survey of Ōtautahi Urban Art and Artists is on at The Welder Events Space (22 Welles Street) from 1st to 9th August 2025. Entry is free.
The exhibition is supported by Christchurch City Council through the Capital Endowment Fund.
