Roll on down to Sumner’s new skate park
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 2nd December 2024
Sumner’s skate park and village green area is officially open.
Wheels are turning at the newly opened skate park which is fitted with a 1.9m deep pool bowl with an upper 1.2m deep bowl section, a 1 - 1.2m deep flow bowl with a corner extension, a turnabout quarter pipe and an ‘across and down’ ledge.
The park has a ramp into the pump bump area and the manual box, a high pump bump, a rail, a quarter pipe, a rollover finger and learner, and back and angled ledges.
A neighbouring community green space has picnic tables, sun umbrellas, barbeques and a performance space surrounded by native plantings.
Sumner Green and Skate Chair Charlie Hudson says this will be a fantastic asset for Sumner, the Bays Area and Christchurch.
“It is a testimony to the collaboration of a dedicated community, central and local government, Christchurch City Council and our local Community Board.
“Thousands of hours of work behind the scenes will now translate into thousands of hours of skating fun and communal activities on the village green.”
Christchurch City Council Community Parks Manager Al Hardy says this skate park has been a labour of love for the Sumner community.
“This has been a long time coming for the community and we know this popular project has been hugely anticipated.
“We’re excited to be able to deliver this recreational area and ‘hang out’ spot right in the heart of Sumner – ready in time to enjoy over the Christmas period and summer months.”
The park also has timber seating and decking with a pathway connecting the skate park area to the village green.
A ceremony by the Sumner Community Residents’ Association and Hub (SCRA) committee on Saturday 30th November marked the official opening of the Village Green and Bays Area Skate Park with a whenua site blessing, workshops, live music, a ribbon-cutting ceremony and skate demonstration.
