Online cultural competency development courses from eCALD
eCALD provides a range of courses for the primary, secondary and NGO health workforce, who are interested in gaining understanding and practical skills to work with culturally and linguistically diverse (CALD) migrant and refugee patients from Asian, Middle Eastern, Latin American or African backgrounds.
There are four fundamental courses available that are intended for anyone working in primary care, secondary care or mental health services:
- Module 1: Culture and Cultural Competency;
- Module 2: Working with Migrant Patients;
- Module 3; Working with Refugee Patients; and
- Module 4: Working with Interpreters.
All courses are available as a 3-hour self-guided online course or a 2-hour face-to-face course on Zoom.
A Cultural Competency and Customer Service course is also available for customer service or non-clinical roles.
Module 1: Culture and Cultural Competency
The aim of the course is to increase your awareness of your cultural background and those of others’ cultures; and to improve your understanding of how cross cultural differences can affect communication, consultation and diagnosis.
Note: This course is a pre-requisite for all other eCALD courses.

Module 4: Working with Interpreters
Many health practitioners have experienced feeling ‘lost in translation’ when working with a trained interpreter. The aim of this course is to provide the necessary knowledge and skills to help you work more effectively with professional trained interpreters, to achieve a better outcome from your communication with non-English speaking patients.
