Puawai 2023: Youth development programme in Christchurch
Puāwai is a nine-month youth development experience for 15 to 18-year-olds in Ōtautahi/ Christchurch. A team of mentors help the rangatahi on the programme to grow their leadership through understanding of self, focussing on themes such as strengths, identity, intersectionality and community.
Puāwai is recruiting rangatahi/young people for the programme for 2023. There are five rōpū and a maximum of 10 rangatahi are wanted for each:
- Māori;
- Pasifika;
- Rainbow;
- Care-Experienced; and
- Cross-Cultural.
The rangatahi are led by two tuākana (mentors) who identify with that group. The programme consists of:
- putting the rangatahi through strengths coaching;
- attending monthly all-in hui on the last Wednesday of the month where each rōpū presents a "window to their world";
- monthly rōpū meetings to debrief; and
- working on community "Activator" projects to finish.
