Magazine Bay Jetty work to begin
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 11th May 2026
Work to refurbish a jetty at Lyttelton’s Magazine Bay – and add a new swimming platform – is set to start on 18 May.
The marina at Magazine Bay was removed in late 2023 due to its poor condition. The small section that remains in place will now be refurbished and extended to include a swimming platform.
Christchurch City Council Manager of Regional Parks Paul Devlin says work will take around five months to complete.
“Our contractors will be removing the pre-cast concrete deck and remediating the existing structural elements before putting in new walkways, extending the decking and adding the new swimming platform.”
The swimming platform will include ladders and a ramp that people can use to enter and exit the water with ease.
“Lyttelton Port Company (LPC) has kindly donated some hardwood piles previously part of their inner harbour jetties for us to use on this project. This has all been milled and dressed, ready for use,” says Mr Devlin.
LPC’s donated timber has also been used in two other recently completed Council projects in the area:
“It’s fantastic to be able to repurpose the timber and give it a new lease on life,” says Mr Devlin.
Contractors Parfitt Construction have been appointed to carry out the work, which is being completed as part of the overarching Naval Point – Te Nukutai o Tapoa development project.
