Spirited Conversation: The real story about puberty blockers
The Ministry of Health removed a claim that puberty blockers were "safe and reversible" from its website in 2024. Then in 2025 the Government moved to effectively ban puberty blockers. This has been been labelled more 'moral panic' than science. Just before the ban was set to be implemented, the Professional Association for Transgender Health Aotearoa (PATHA) successfully lodged a injunction suspending the ban until a substantive appeal can be considered by the court during 2026.
Dame Sue Bagshaw will be leading a Spirited Conversation during Pride Ōtautahi 2026 on just what is the real story about puberty blockers. Dr Bagshaw is a senior lecturer in paediatrics with University of Otago, Fellow of the Australasian Chapter of Sexual Health Medicine, specialises in the health needs of young people, and chairs the Youth Hub Trust.
