Selwyn District Council media release: 21st January 2025

The much-anticipated construction of the Lincoln Town Centre is set to begin with the construction of the northern and southern car parks.

The project has been awarded to Fulton Hogan and work is due to begin in early February.

The Lincoln Town Centre project was confirmed through the Long-Term Plan 2024-2034, with funding and work brought forward to begin in 2025. The plan focusses on upgrading Gerald Street creating a refreshed town centre, fit for the future of Lincoln with more public space, while promoting safety for traffic.

The 100 new car parks will be situated between Lyttleton Street and Maurice Street and off Gerald Street beside Maurice Street and  are designed to support access to the town centre and improve the availability of parking for residents, visitors, and local businesses, enhancing accessibility to the town’s amenities and services.

The car park construction work is being completed ahead of Lincoln Town Centre – Stage 1 which is due to start construction next summer, Council Executive Director Infrastructure and Property Tim Mason says.

“We are excited to see the Lincoln Town Centre Car Parks project take shape. This is an important part of delivering on our commitments to the community through the Long-Term Plan and with the support of Fulton Hogan, we are confident that this development will provide improved access and safety for the town centre and contribute to building a vibrant town centre.”

Construction is expected to take about five months to complete, with the new facilities anticipated to be fully operational by the end of June. Throughout the project, the community can expect regular updates on the construction process, and efforts will be made to minimise disruptions to the surrounding area.

The Lincoln Town Centre Car Parks are part of a broader development plan to enhance the town’s infrastructure and public services, ensuring it continues to thrive as a vibrant and accessible destination.

Other work coming up in the area includes wastewater pipe renewals on West Belt, Maurice Street, Lyttelton Street, William Street, Robert Street and North Belt. The wastewater pipes are approaching their end of life and need to renewed to ensure continued network resilience. More information on this will be announced as further details are confirmed.
