Be water wise: Make every drop count
Selwyn District Council media release: 25th November 2024
As the weather warms up, Selwyn residents are being encouraged to be water wise and make every drop count this summer.
Water is not an unlimited resource and we need to use it wisely. The average household in Selwyn uses over 1,000 litres per day while typical consumption across New Zealand is around 675 litres per day.
Being water wise helps save money, helps your garden and helps keep water flowing for everyone without water restrictions. It also means more water will be available throughout the summer period at a steady pressure.
Some simple tips are:
- Water for three five-minute intervals over a couple of hours rather than 15 minutes continuously to help the soil absorb water.
- Don’t water from 6am to 9am or 4pm to 9pm.
- Use a hose and water the roots of plants. This uses less water than a sprinkler and gets the water where plants need it most.
