A hot spell predicted: Please conserve water
Hurunui District Council media release: 9th January 2024
As we anticipate a stretch of hot weather over the next two weeks, it is crucial that we come together as a community to conserve our precious water resources. The heat not only affects us but also puts immense pressure on the rivers and aquifers that supply our water.
In an effort to safeguard our natural resources, particularly our water aquifers, water restrictions will be implemented when necessary. It's essential to note that these restrictions are preventive measures, physical constraints on your water supply may or may not be required. Rather, they aim to encourage responsible water usage during periods of increased demand.
Remember, small changes in our daily routines will make a significant impact on water conservation:
- Fix water leaks promptly.
- Adjust your mower height: Raising your lawnmower blade to leave grass taller will provide shade to the soil and reduce evaporation.
- Embrace a brown lawn: having a brown lawn is part of Kiwi summer, embrace it. If you do water your lawn, do so sparingly and during the early morning or late evening to minimise water loss through evaporation.
- Stay Informed: Keep yourself informed about local water restrictions and adjust your lawn and garden care habits accordingly.
- Sweep outdoor areas rather than hosing.
- Opt for full loads in your washing machine and dishwasher.
