Changes on Rolleston Ave for Museum redevelopment
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 29th March 2023
Safety improvements for people walking, cycling and scooting during Canterbury Museum’s multi-million dollar redevelopment are about to be installed.
Christchurch City Council is making alterations to the Rolleston Avenue and Park Terrace shared path to accommodate containers and fencing for the Museum work.
“The changes are being made to safely move people through the area over the five year redevelopment period,” Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright says.
A temporary two way on-road cycleway from the Antigua Boatsheds to Salisbury Street will be installed.
There will also be P3 school pick-up and drop-off car parks on Gloucester Street, coach parking will move from outside the Botanic Gardens.
Traffic calming will be installed to help lower speeds in locations where there are lots of people travelling in different ways.
“Moving cyclists on-road will help to ease congestion on this busy shared path and make it a safer and more enjoyable experience for visitors, walkers, runners, cyclists, and people riding scooters,” Mr Wright says.
The work will be installed under a Traffic Management Plan, however staff will present a report to Council at an upcoming meeting for formal approval.
“The use of temporary materials means there will be limited construction impacts, and we can easily make any tweaks to the layout if something isn’t working well,” Mr Wright says.
The current entrance to the Botanic Gardens adjacent to the Museum as well as the pedestrian crossing at Worcester Boulevard will also be relocated to align with the Peacock Fountain and the Arts Centre archway.
The new entrance was signalled in the approved 2017 Botanic Gardens Spatial Plan.
Work on the gates will begin in early April and changes on Rolleston Avenue will be in place by mid-May.
To allow contractors to implement the road layout changes, a one-way system will be in place on Rolleston Avenue and Park Terrace from Kilmore Street to Cambridge Terrace from Monday 17 April until 10 May.
