New campaign: Challenge Islamophobic Language and Loathing
The Islamic Women’s Council of New Zealand (IWCNZ) recently launched a social media campaign - Challenging Islamophobic Language and Loathing (CHILL). This campaign aims to provide a platform for Muslim women in New Zealand to share their stories - to celebrate and to inspire, as well as counter negative and false gendered stereotypes.
The campaign’s four key objectives are:
- Promote education and awareness about NZ Muslim women and their lives in Aotearoa to dispel stereotypes and misconceptions.
- Enable Muslim women to control their own narratives - gaining valuable media and social media experience.
- Reduce incidents of verbal and physical abuse against NZ Muslim women by encouraging empathy and challenging Islamophobic rhetoric.
- Motivate all forms of media to feature diverse perspectives, stories, and achievements of Muslim women - creating a sustainable positive change in perceptions.
