Recycle a Device: What impact can a laptop have?
Recycle A Device - or RAD - is an Aotearoa initiative which matches ākonga (students) and rangatahi (young people) who need a laptop with a donated and refurbished device.
Over 1000 RAD devices were requested in just the first week of school this year. This shows the scale of the digital divide, and it also very clearly demonstrates an opportunity for a positive impact for rangatahi for the many good quality devices that are no longer needed in our communities.
Here are some recipient comments on "What has your RAD laptop enabled you to do?":
- Feel confident;
- Access my engineering course;
- Apply for jobs;
- Do my homework at home;
- Learn new tech skills; and
- Have enough time to do all my work because I don't have to share or borrow anymore.
The team also teach high school students in-demand tech engineering skills to refurbish the laptops so they get to other kids who need them.
If you have a laptop which is less than ten years old and comes with a charger, please donate it to RAD. It really can make a difference to someone's life.
