New suicide prevention videos from the Mental Health Foundation
Kia ora. The Mental Health Foundation is pleased to introduce their newest suicide prevention video suite "Connecting through Kōrero – Kōrerohia ngā mahi whakamomori ki te hunga taiohi".
These videos are for parents, caregivers, teachers, counsellors, aunties, uncles, friends, and other whānau members who want to start a kōrero/conversation with taiohi/young people about suicide.
Taiohi know suicide is a big issue in Aotearoa - they can come across it through the media, they may know someone who has died by suicide or be supporting a friend who is feeling suicidal. They're talking about it with each other – it's time for adults to join the kōrero. These videos will show you how.
Watch the Connecting through Kōrero – Kōrerohia ngā mahi whakamomori ki te hunga taiohi videos. Season three of 13 Reasons Why launches on Netflix this Friday, so you might like to start with the video "What to do when a loved one sees suicide online". It guides you to talk to your young people about how they feel when they watch this series or other media that touches on suicide.
Guidance on seasons one and two of 13 Reasons Why is also available.
The videos support the online resource Connecting Through Kōrero, that includes conversation starters, things to avoid, answers to tricky questions and where to turn for more support.
Visit the MHF's website if you're worried a taiohi in your life is suicidal.
Please share these videos far and wide. The Mental Health Foundation hope the kōrero they inspire will help build strong connections between you and your taiohi so you can work together to overcome challenges.
