Consultation opens on Fitzgerald–Stanmore red zone plans

Draft plans to transform red zone land between Fitzgerald Ave and Stanmore Road into a green, recreational space are now open for public feedback.
The area includes the Bill Sutton Heritage House and Garden, and connects to the City to Sea Pathway used by cyclists and pedestrians.
Residential Red Zone Manager Dave Little says the project is an exciting opportunity to transition from the hard, urban edge of the city into a more relaxed, ecological space.
“The plan proposes several changes including native ecological restoration planting and fruit tree planting, recreational cycling and walking tracks and introducing nature play and viewing areas.
“There are already fruit trees at the site, and the additional plantings would complement these nicely. Some of the bike and walking tracks would be newly created, while other existing paths could be developed into proper tracks.”
This work is all part of the Council’s regeneration plan for the river corridor, which covers 602 hectares of red zoned land that once held almost 5,500 properties.
Mr Little says the consultation will allow the Council to understand what local residents and stakeholders want to see developed and for them to raise any concerns.
“This feedback is critical in allowing us to develop a final plan for the project that addresses their requirements and concerns. We expect to have the plan ready before the end of the year to go to the OARC Regeneration Committee for approval. If approved, construction could get underway next year.”
