Selwyn in the Spotlight with the Canterbury Museum
Discover the history of Selwyn through a rich tapestry of objects from the Canterbury Museum collection. Canterbury Museum Curator Human History Paulien Martens tells the stories of this diverse region through treasures and photographs.
Date: Tuesday 16th June 2026.
Time: 10 to 11am.
Location: Christchurch Botanic Gardens.
Cost: FREE.
Learn about the region's mining, the history of the Homebush brick, the impact of war, vintage recipe books written by Mary Barker of Darfield, Māori artefacts like a patu hi (fishing club) and a horse named Starlight. The talk will also feature many photos taken in Arthur's Pass by Charles Edward Warden, who became well known after refusing to serve in the military during World War One.
Through storytelling about these objects, you will be taken on a journey through Canterbury Museum’s collection and learn something new about the social history of Selwyn along the way. This talk is organised by the Friends of the Museum.
