Busy May ahead for Canterbury’s regional parks
Environment Canterbury media release: 5th May 2026
Autumn has arrived across Canterbury’s regional parks, bringing crisp mornings, vibrant colours, and a busy calendar of events throughout May.
“May is shaping up to be a lively one, with some spectacular autumn colours on show across the parks,” says Team Leader Parks and Forests, Karen Elliott.
“It’s a busy and vibrant time, with people out making the most of the season. Whether you're heading out for a walk, ride or event, it’s a great time to get amongst it—just keep the shorter days in mind when planning.”
Most parks and tracks will remain open throughout the month, but some areas will be temporarily closed during events. It’s always a good idea to check signage on arrival and be aware of shared‑use arrangements while events are underway.

Looking after our parks together
Behind every event and open track is a team of rangers and parks staff quietly working year-round to keep things running; from fixing storm damage and maintaining tracks to supporting events and jumping on issues as they arise.
We appreciate the role our community plays in looking after these spaces too, working together helps us care for a park network that spans a large and diverse area.
