Ageing Positively Week: Connect, learn, enjoy yourself and be inspired
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 6th October 2026
Try a new hobby, discover digital resources, meet like-minded people. Christchurch's 50+ community is invited to do all three and more, during a week of free activities celebrating positive ageing (17th to 24th October 2026).
Christchurch City Libraries is marking Ageing Positively Week with events at libraries across the city.
Hayley Browne, Manager of Programmes, Events and Learning, says the week is for people who have more time on their hands, are entering retirement or simply love learning. "This is a chance to explore what's on offer through local groups and your library, while also celebrating the many ways people contribute to our communities.
"Whether you're keen to learn something new, meet others, be entertained or simply discover what's available, there's something for everyone."
Libraries are increasingly important community hubs, where people can connect, learn new skills and access information. They also play a key role in supporting those who experience social isolation or face barriers to accessing services, including digital technology.
The highlight of the week is the Ageing Positively Expo at Tūranga on Saturday 17 October, a free event celebrating the opportunities and possibilities that come with ageing. With more than 20 exhibitors, plus activities, entertainment, and interactive experiences, it's designed to inspire people to stay active, creative, connected and curious.
Visitors to the expo can have a go at tai chi, tango, walking football or learning a waiata. There will be live performances from the Muse Choir, Ma Bell, NZ Opera artists and a jazz trio, with plenty of stalls from community organisations and local businesses to explore.
The expo kicks off with a 10am tai chi session, then runs from 11am to 4pm. It's open to anyone keen to find new interests, make connections or get more involved in their community.
Throughout the week, Christchurch City Libraries will also run activities to help older adults get to know library services, build confidence with technology, connect with others and discover new interests.
The week closes at 2pm on Saturday 24 October at Tūranga with The Nelken Line, a walking, movement-based community event inspired by Pina Bausch's iconic "carnation line". No dance experience is needed. Everyone is invited to learn a simple sequence of four gentle movements and walk it together to the music of a live band, side by side with people of every age and background.
Parking around Tūranga is limited, consider taking public transport, rideshare or a taxi if possible.
