Selwyn District Council media release: 6th May 2025

Anyone who’s thought about taking a stand and running for Council in the 2025 Local Body Elections, can find out more at an upcoming candidate information session.

Selwyn District Council will be holding five candidate information sessions from 26th May to 30th June around the Selwyn district for prospective candidates in this year’s local body elections.

“Our upcoming candidate information sessions are an opportunity for anyone who’s interested in standing in the 2025 elections to learn more about what is involved in being an elected member. The sessions will cover the nomination and election processes, and the roles of council and elected members,” says Sharon Mason, Chief Executive, who will also lead the workshops.

Candidate information sessions will be held from 6.30-7.30pm at the following dates and locations:

  • Monday 26th May – Lincoln Event Centre;
  • Tuesday 3rd June – Doyleston Hall;
  • Thursday 5th June – Rolleston Council offices (Norman Kirk Drive); and
  • Thursday 10th June – Darfield Library and Service Centre.

An online session with the Electoral Officer will be held on Monday 30th June (6.30 to 7.30pm).

“We are encouraging anyone who wants to make a difference in the local community to take a stand,” Ms Mason says. “With the pace at which Waikirikiri Selwyn is growing, this is an opportunity for anyone who’s passionate about the community and district to stand up and run for Council. With a diverse community we need a range of elected members of different ages, ethnicities and backgrounds.”

Anyone over the age of 18 can stand for election as long as they are a New Zealand citizen, enrolled on the Selwyn electoral roll and are nominated by two people over the age of 18 who are also enrolled to vote in the area the candidate is planning to stand.

Nominations for candidates for the available positions will open on Friday 4th July and close at noon on Friday 1st August 2025.
