Who let the dogs out?
Selwyn District Council media release: 27th January 2025
Our Animal Control team have seen a recent increase in dogs wandering about in Selwyn without their owners. Over the last two weeks, they have had numerous dogs reported as wandering. Thankfully, most of these dogs have been reunited with their owners due to being registered and microchipped.
To prevent dogs from getting lost and escaping, you can do the following things:
- Ensure there is a sturdy fence around your property that is at least six foot tall.
- Ensure all gates leading out of your yard are secure and locked.
- Block any holes or gaps in your fence or gates with chicken wire, hardware cloth or expanding foam.
- Supervise your dog when they are in the yard or when you are out and about with them and they are off their leash, especially if they are a new dog or puppy.
- Make sure the dog’s collar is comfortable and well-fitted.
- Inform your neighbours about your dog’s wandering tendencies.
If you have lost or found a dog please contact the Council as soon as possible by calling 0800 SELWYN (0800 735 996) with a description of the dog and where it was last seen.
The Council keeps a register of dogs lost and found and most of the time we are able to reunite dogs and their owners.
