Sumner skatepark is kick-flipping into gear
Christchurch City Council Newsline: 1st May 2024
The wheels are turning and construction is about to get underway at Sumner’s new skate and scooter park.
“We know this has been a long time coming for the Sumner community, and this project has proved hugely popular with locals,” says Acting Community Parks Manager Bridie Gibbings.
“It’s been a labour of love for the residents for years and will be a great asset to the community once completed.”
The skate park will include a 1.9m deep pool bowl with an upper 1.2m deep mini bowl section, a 1m to 1.2m deep flow bowl with a corner extension, a turnabout quarter pipe and an ‘across and down’ ledge.
The facility will have a ramp into the pump bump area and the manual box, a high pump bump, a rail, a quarter pipe, a rollover finger and learner, and back and angled ledges.
Seating, pool-style fencing and landscaping will surround the park.
“The area is about more than just concrete ramps and railings – it will provide an inclusive space for young people to gather and improve their skills,” says Ms Gibbings.
“The site is right in the heart of the community, and we’re excited to see it become a new ‘hang out spot’ for Sumner youth.”
Construction will get underway in May and is set to be completed by Christmas.
The park is the first stage of defining the area as the ‘Sumner Village Green’, which aims to be an outdoor space for the whole community to enjoy.
Once construction of the skatepark is completed, works will get underway on the green area which includes a picnic space, seating and a double barbeque.
