Wednesday, October 9, 2024   Posted in: Signatory Notice Board By: Administrator With tags: gardens, heritage, festival, open day

The Canterbury Community Gardens Association are hosting FREE open days at seven gardens across the city during the Heritage Festival. Come along and learn about each garden's history and purpose from the people involved.

Ōtākaro Orchard Food Forest Community Garden

Ōtākaro Orchard Food Forest, Community Garden and Education hub serves as the welcoming front door to the local food resilience movement and a living lab for green building technologies.

Date: Saturday 12th October 2024.
Time: 10am to 2.30pm.
Location: 227 Cambridge Terrace (Central City).

Packe Street Park and Community Garden

This small garden wonderland was a pioneer of community green space in Ōtautahi around 30 years ago. It stands as a living green monument to the power and persistence of a thoughtful, future-thinking, and passionate community group.

Date and Times:

  • Saturday 12th October 2024 (10am to noon);
  • Monday 14th October 2024 (4 to 6pm); or
  • Thursday 17th October 2024 (4 to 6pm).

Location: 125 Packe Street (Edgeware).

Te Ngaki o Waiutuutu - UC Community Garden

Te Ngaki o Waiutuutu was established in 2002 by students from Kākāriki Environment Club, with support from Facilities Management. Some of the University housing back gardens were reclaimed from grass to permaculture-designed beds.

Date: Tuesday 15th October 2024.
Time: 2 to 5pm.
Location: 20 Kirkwood Avenue (Upper Riccarton).

Mairehau Neighbourhood Community Garden

The idea for Mairehau Neighbourhood Garden was conceived around early 2021, and came to fruition over almost two years, culminating in our grand opening on 5th November 2022. The idea was dreamed by our staff at Neighbourhood Trust as we pondered what families in the Mairehau and St Albans area would do if our funding for kai support ever dried up.

Dates and Times:

  • Thursday 17th October 2024 (10am to noon); or
  • Thursday 24th October 2024 (10am to noon).

Location: 64 McFaddens Road (St Albans).

Kohinga Māra Community Garden

Kohinga Māra was established in 2021 as part of the St Albans Community Strategy, with a focus on promoting local food growth and consumption, and through food, building connections between people of all cultures living in St Albans.

Date: Saturday 19th October 2024.
Time: 11am to 2pm.
Location: 130 Caledonian Road (St Albans).

Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Garden

The Mt Pleasant Memorial Community Garden was created in 2018 after the rebuild of our community centre was completed. It sits between the centre and the KidsFirst Bays Kindergarten on a patch of land that would have been relatively sterile and barren had a dedicated group of locals not decided to create a small community garden to serve both as a memorial to the impacts of the 2011 earthquakes on our community and a relaxing, bumping-in space for people.

Dates and Times:

  • Saturday 19th October 2024 (9am to 1pm);
  • Sunday 20th October 2024 (1 to 4pm);
  • Saturday 26th October 2024 (9am to noon); or
  • Monday 28th October 2024 (10am to 1pm).

Location: 3 McCormacks Bay Road (Mount Pleasant).

Christchurch South Community Gardens Trust

This garden was established in 1999 with a strong focus on recycling and waste minimisation. In 2024 we were awarded the Christchurch Beautifying Society 1st Prize President’s Cup (Community Gardens).

Dates and Times:

  • Saturday 19th October 2024 (10am to 1pm); or
  • Thursday 24th October 2024 (10am to 2pm).

Location: 188 Strickland Street (Spreydon).
