Extensive roadworks underway in north-west Christchurch
Christchurch City Councl Newsline: 18h January 2024
A major package of work has begun throughout Ilam, Bryndwr and Burnside - including intersection upgrades, road resurfacing and wastewater renewal.
Construction will run on the various Christchurch City Council transport and three waters projects from January to June 2024.
Work will include intersection upgrades at three busy intersections to improve their safety: Athol Terrace and Waimairi Road, Clyde Road and Ilam Road, as well as Clyde Road and Greers Road.
Contractors will be back on-site continuing construction of the Te Ara O-Rakipaoa Nor’West Arc Cycleway along Ilam Road between Memorial Avenue and Ilam Fields.
Old water pipes that have come to the end of their service life will be replaced on Memorial Avenue between Ilam Road and Roydvale Avenue, as well as odour control work on University Drive.
There will also be resurfacing work on sections of Grahams Road and Roydvale Avenue.
“This is a huge package of work, and we know road works are disruptive so we’re taking a high impact, short duration approach and doing everything in the area at once to get out of people’s way as quickly as possible and minimise the impact on the area in the longer term,” Transport Operations Manager Stephen Wright said.
“The bulk of the work began in early January to make the most of the quieter holiday period for residents and before students head back to school and university.”
A lot of the projects will be wrapped up by March 2024. However the Memorial Avenue water main renewal work will run through to May and the Nor’West Arc Cycleway construction will continue through to June.
“The work has been planned to keep traffic flowing as smoothly as possible but please allow for extra time if you’re travelling through the area, particularly to the airport or for school pickups and drop offs” Mr Wright said.
“Thanks for your patience as we replace old pipes and make our roads way safer.”
