Keep your dog safe and happy this holiday period

With the Christmas season fast approaching, the Christchurch City Council Animal Management team are urging pet owners to take care of their furry friends this holiday period.
“If you’re planning on heading away over the holiday season, please ensure you have made suitable arrangements to keep your animals safe and happy,” says Animal Service Manager Lionel Bridger.
“Make sure your dog is looked after by organising a pet sitter, having a family member or friend look after your pup, or book your dog into an animal kennel.”
Mr Bridger says if you need to leave your animals at home for a short period of time, there are a few things you can do to help make them more comfortable.
“Ensure your dog is checked on at least twice a day and has been taken for a walk.
“If you must leave your dog inside alone, please leave a radio or television on as background noise to distract your dog and make them feel less alone.”
It is also essential to ensure your dog has access to food, water and shelter at all times.
“Dogs are sociable animals, so it’s really best for them not to be left alone while their owners are away on holiday,” says Mr Bridger.
“Our dogs are our friends, they’re part of our families and it’s important to make sure they’re well looked after.”
