About dementia in New Zealand
Dementia is not a normal part of ageing - contrary to what many people think. It affects people of all cultures, intellectual abilities and lifestyles. It is more common in people over the age of 65, but can also affect people as young as 35.
- Dementia is one of the leading causes of death in older adults in the country.
- Five percent of people diagnosed with dementia are under 65 years old – this is referred to as either “early-onset” or “younger-onset” dementia.
- It is estimated that 7500 people in Canterbury have dementia, and with an aging population and earlier onset, this is expected to triple by 2050.
- Dementia Canterbury provides free professional support services and education to more than 2000 clients plus families and whānau, with 500 new referrals every year.
