Christchurch City Council Newsline: 16th June 2022

There is a bright constellation of events on throughout Ōtautahi-Christchurch this Matariki.

Matariki is a star cluster that rises in midwinter, signalling the start of the Māori New Year.

Matariki is a time for whānau and friends to come together to reflect on the past year, remember those who have passed away, and prepare for the seasons ahead.

From dazzling artworks to family story times, there’s plenty on around the city throughout the Matariki period. Some are highlighted below.

Check out What's On website for the latest local events.

Tīrama Mai bringing the light

The second annual Tīrama Mai lighting festival starts Friday 24th June and runs until Sunday 3rd July 2022. The free event features a series of illuminated artworks, dazzling light displays and live performances set up around the central city.

Check out the interactive map of installations and start planning your route around the city.

Matariki at Christchurch Libraries

Come along to the free Whānau Day at Tūranga on Saturday 18th June from 10am to 2.30pm. Learn about Matariki and take part of a range of fun, educational activities.

Check out the schedule of Matariki activities and events happening at a Christchurch City library near you. There’s something for everyone - from colouring sheets, to story times with Matariki kōrero (stories) and waiata (songs) – and it’s all free.

Matariki at The Arts Centre

There are also a range of activities on offer at Te Matatiki Toi Ora The Arts Centre from 7th June to 6th July. Matariki celebrations include a Kapa Haka Showcase, The Lion King Reo Māori movie, and much more.

Check out the full schedule of Matariki events at The Arts Centre.

Matariki in the Zone

Matariki in the Zone is back this year. Visit Avebury House and the Richmond Community Garden, to trace the path of the Matariki star cluster in the red zone. As night falls the ‘star stations’ will light up creating a star path you can follow after sundown. This event is free to attend and is running nightly from Monday 20th to Thursday 30th June 2022.

Matariki Glow Show

The Matariki Glow Show is happening at the Isaac Theatre Royal on Friday 8th July 2022. Two exciting, all-new, giant-scale puppet shows for tamariki, educators and whānau. This is an upbeat show that ‘edu-tains’ and engages the audience for over 50 minutes with patai (questions and answers) afterwards.

Book now on for the Matariki Glow Show (Ticketek).
