Council concerned about road sign vandalism
Waimakariri District Council media release: 10th May 2022
A recent spate of road sign vandalism will mean many Waimakariri motorists will be unsure what obstacles lie ahead of them when driving across the District.
Road signs are important cues for road users to warn, encourage or inform them. They help us make good decisions, can provide direction and warn us of something we need to know.
The Council’s Roading and Transport Manager Joanne McBride says that unfortunately for Waimakariri motorists there has been a recent increase in the number of signs being vandalised.
“We’ve seen a sharp increase in the number of road signs being cut down or run over in the Mandeville and Ohoka areas specifically.
“While the people doing this might think it’s a victimless crime, the reality is that drivers rely on speed and warning signs, markings and other features to help them safely drive and without road signs the likelihood someone will have an accident is a lot higher.”
The Council wants everyone - whether they’re walking, cycling, driving, motorcycling or taking public transport - to get where they’re going safely.
If you have information about the vandalism, or know of a sign that has been damaged or is blocked by vegetation, please let the Council (0800 965468, office[at]wmk.govt.nz) or use Snap Send Solve.
Together we can make our roads safer.
