Boosted Car Seat Subsidies in the Waimakariri
Waimakariri District Council media release: 24th October 2018
Do you know that the cost to recycle your kid’s car seat at one of our local transfer stations is seriously subsidised by Council? We introduced recycling of car seats earlier this year to our residents and the response has been great.
The company which recycle the raw materials have recently told Council they are increasing their processing costs from $10 to $25 per seat.
However the Council is committed to continuing to support this recycling initiative, so residents who drop off car seats for recycling will continue to be heavily subsidised and still only pay $5 per seat. Non-residents will be partially subsidised so the charge will be $20 per seat.
So remember to bring along proof of residency when you pop your car seat into your local transfer station for recycling.
We collaborate with the SeatSmart recycling programme and they recycle over 90 percent of a car seat's components freeing up valuable landfill space.
The increase in fees will allow the programme to be sustainable and self-funding while still achieving the key aims of diverting waste from landfill, recovering resources, raising awareness of expiry dates on car seats to improve child safety and providing work for social enterprise.
SeatSmart accepts any brand of booster, convertible seat or capsule. Sorry, no polystyrene seats, snap and go’s or other car seat accessories can be accepted.
