Getting Through Together Digest: 9th December 2021
Kia ora Let’s face it Aotearoa – it’s been a pretty tough year, and at times it can feel like we’re crawling towards the 2021 finish line.
It may seem a bit counterintuitive, but one of the best ways to get through tough times is to spend time thinking about what you’re grateful for.
Gratitude magnifies positive feelings and experiences and prevents us from taking things for granted. Not only does practising gratitude improve our mental health, but it can improve the quality of our relationships as well as our physical health.
Whether it’s friendships, weekends, pets, crunchy peanut butter or a flushing toilet, there are lots of small (and not so small) things we can all be grateful for.
Of course, there’s lots more to be grateful for… In this edition, you can read about the volunteers providing gift baskets to Mums in hospital, the health heroes who continue to go over and above to keep us well, and the selfless actions of students delivering groceries during lockdown.
Read on for a mental health boosting dose of gratitude.

Not all right?
New challenges and the loss of our regular routines is causing stress for many of us. This can really erode our wellbeing over time. It’s important to remember to do the little things that help recharge us. It’s also important to know there is someone to talk to and free help available.
It’s all right to reach out if you need to - we all need a bit of support from time-to-time.
Call or text 1737 to speak with a trained counsellor anytime - it’s free and completely confidential. You can also call Lifeline on 0800 543354 or text HELP to 4357.
Check out the Mental Health Foundation’s website for further advice on how to stay mentally well during this time.
