Research Reflection: Te Reo Māori gave me hope
By Brianna (Age 17) - aAn excerpt from the book "Been There : Young Peoples Stories of Struggle and Hope".
Growing up, I always had one parent with me. From since I can remember, my dad missed all my birthdays as he was on deployment. My mum was always there for me. Even if I was a pain and trust me, I was a pain after my parents split when I was 10. To say I felt pretty alone every day is an understatement as all my friends moved away as they too had parents in the military. I had no one in the most important point in my life that far.

Been There: Young People's Stories of Struggle and Hope
This book is a collection of stories from 25 New Zealand young people, who have written about a crisis or struggle and what has given them the hope to endure and to pull through. The remarkable openness of their writing means that you will feel anger at the way some young people are treated and admiration for their honesty and courage. You will find their stories sobering, insightful, sensitive and very moving.
"Been There" is now available for purchase for $20 (including GST and postage within New Zealand). All profits from the sale of the book go to the Christchurch Youth Hub.
You can purchase "Been There" through the Collaborative website.
