Mental Health Advocacy and Peer Support (MHAPS).All activities listed take place at 826 Colombo Street (corner of Peterborough Street) unless otherwise stated.

Cost is $4 per session for workshops and Mood Swingers. A donation is appreciated for other activities.

Mental Health Advocacy and Peer Support (MHAPS) also offers peer support, peer advocacy, support groups, a drop-in centre, a consumer participation group and a volunteer-run radio show.


Anxiety Peer Recovery group: Fortnightly

Awareness Consumer Group: Monthly from 12.30 to 2.30pm

Friendly and supportive Forum to discuss mental health and addictions topics aimed at contributing to improvements in mental health and addiction services. Light refreshments provided.

Peer Recovery Group: Weekly in late morning

Come along and take part in the conversation with a supportive group facilitated by a peer support worker.

Wellbeing Workshops: Weekly from 12.30 to 2.30pm

These provide a taster for longer evening courses, as well as an opportunity to meet people and enjoy some peer support time at the end of each session.

  • 7th March - Mindfulness: Apps for Living with Kathy Hughes
    Mindfulness exercises are simple attention exercises focusing on our breath or physical sensations in an accepting and nonjudgemental way. There is much research now showing how helpful mindfulness is in relieving distress and increasing wellbeing.
  • 14th March - Art and Creativity: Creative Exploration with Ngaire Ginders
    This workshop explores your emotions and thoughts through a range of art such as drawing, painting, movement and creative writing. No experience or particular talent is required, it’s all about the process—the end result is a bonus!
  • 21st March - Breathing and Relaxation: Focus on Breathing with Fiona Young
    Healthy breathing increases our sense of wellbeing and reduces anxiety. Fiona will help you to recognise breathing issues that may be contributing to your anxiety, and teach you techniques to help you feel more relaxed.
  • 28th March - Yoga: A Guided Practice with Karen Stevens
    This session will  include an explanation of a breathing and resting pose that can be used at any time, an alignment technique to avoid injury and learning how to stop a pose at your ‘physical edge.’

Breathing and Relaxation course: Weekly for 5 weeks, from 6 to 7.30pm

Experienced physiotherapist Rosemary Mannering teaches us how to manage stress and anxiety by changing our breathing patterns and reducing muscle tension. This course costs $55 per person.

Depression Peer Recovery Group: Fortnightly in the evening

Themes Information Evening: 29th March from 6 to 7.30pm

Topic for March is hoarding, clutter and disorganised living. This talk will be presented by Juliet MacLeod from the Anxiety Disorders Service. Gold coin donation to attend, and bookings are required for groups of 4 or more.

Mood Swingers Singing Group: Weekly from 1 to 2pm

Come along when you like and sing informally with others who love to sing. This group is led by Rachel Bayliss. Enjoy the health benefits of singing a range of songs to suit all moods.

Mindfulness Course: Weekly for 4 weeks, 7 to 8.30pm

Tutor Kathy Hughes takes us through this popular and well proven method for gaining control of thoughts, improving openness and acceptance, and reducing stress and anxiety. This course costs $45 per person.

Wellness Recovery Action Planning (WRAP) course: Weekly for 5 weeks

A WRAP course assists you to form your own plan for wellbeing and to become an effective advocate for yourself. This course costs $10 per person.
