World No Tobacco Day 2017

The aim of World No Tobacco Day (31 May) is to draw attention to the harm smoking causes around the world and encourage people to quit, or not take up smoking in the first place.

In decades gone by, cigarettes were once considered a health product. Advertised as the cure to various ailments from bronchitis to anxiety, smoking was endorsed by GPs and dentists until the 1960s. That was until cigarettes were proven, without a doubt, to be a killer in 1964’s landmark United States Surgeon General's report.

Undeterred, Big Tobacco then positioned their deadly products as cool. Think the wild, rugged Marlborough Man, or the slender, seductive Virginia Slims. Simultaneously, in Victoria we saw these same companies sponsor sports events and the arts – purporting health and coolness by association. By the 1980s tobacco advertising was rampant across Victoria.

"Then in 1987, a line was drawn in the sand in Victoria,” wrote VicHealth CEO Jerril Rechter.

“The Victorian Parliament passed the Tobacco Act of 1987 with tri partisan support. This unprecedented cross-political support saw the creation of the world’s first health promotion foundation – VicHealth."

In the 30 years since that momentous day, VicHealth, together with its partners, has created a huge cultural and social shift in the way tobacco is viewed in Victoria.

Salt research a hearty reminder to stay healthy

New research from the George Institute has revealed Australians are consuming twice the recommended upper limit of salt intake.

The research is a timely reminder that we need to get serious about cutting back on salt, according to VicHealth Healthy Eating Principal Program Officer Jenny Reimers.

“While eating too much salt is often overshadowed by other harmful eating habits, such as sugar, fat, and fad diets, it’s no secret that salt is one of the biggest killers in our pantries,” Ms Reimers writes.

“Excessive salt consumption increases the risk of high blood pressure and cardiovascular disease including heart attack, stroke and blood vessel disease.”

Study reveals Victorians’ knowledge, attitudes and behaviours to salt

Research has revealed that less than a third of Victorians know the recommended daily maximum amount of salt they should be eating while most believe we eat too much salt. This research was undertaken by Deakin University in collaboration with VicHealth and The George Institute for Global Health.

The study - published in BMC Public Health in May - provides insights into consumer’s knowledge, attitudes and behaviours (KABs) related to salt. This can be used to inform awareness and education campaigns and serve as a baseline measure to monitor changes in KABs over time.

Promoting gender equality for improved health and wellbeing

Despite our knowledge that gender equality improves health and societal outcomes, Australia still has some way to go in creating true equality. Regardless of one’s socioeconomic class, there are systematic gender differences in income, educational attainment and health.

The new Gender Equality and Health Position Statement outlines VicHealth’s commitment to addressing inequalities between men and women, so that all Victorians can realise their full potential for health and wellbeing regardless of gender.
